iDrive is the BMW's infotainment system. In the redesigned 5-Series, the iDrive has been updated with a new interface. It now includes a 10.2 inch high resolution display with straightforward menu design to control navigation and audio. The system can be controlled via voice recognition, the steering wheel controls or the new iDrive scroll wheel with handwriting recognition feature. Gesture control allows drivers to control the menu through simple hand gestures, so you don't have to physically touch the screen.
The BMW 5-Series offers a surprising number of features. The 5-Series includes dual-zone climate control, moonroof, USB ports, 12-speaker audio and HD radio. And for the first time adaptive LED headlights and driver drowsiness monitoring is included to help keep sleepy drivers safe.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has awarded the 5-Series with 5 stars overall. The vehicle performed well in all tests, only getting 4 stars in its frontal crash test. The vehicle has been adequately loaded with air bags and other safety features, and there plenty of additional safety features available for purchase. The 5-Series offers a number of different engine options. The base trim engine is a 2.0 liter I-4 engine that generates 248 horsepower. The 335 horsepower, 3.0 liter I-6 engine is available in the 540i sedan. The 535i trim features a 300 horsepower, 3.0 liter I-6 engine. The most powerful engine is the 4.4 liter twin turbo V8 feature in the 550i which generates 445 horsepower.
The base 530i sedan trim with 20 liter I-4 engine has the best gas mileage, getting 24 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. By contrast the 550i trim gets 15 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway.
